Over the course of three consecutive Fridays starting May 22, the Global Shapers Community Manila Hub is organizing the Sustainability Webinar Series in line with the celebration of the World Environment Day on June 5.

In solidarity with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP)’s international theme, the webinar series will tackle “Biodiversity” through the lens of youth leaders in celebration of their roles in creating solutions for sustainability.

“For the existence of our species to last another century, we have to focus more on sustainability especially in these trying times. How do we save our biodiversity that provides us with raw materials for consumption and production; with ecological life support; with recreational activities; and especially cultural connections?” posed Rage Gonzales, Co-Project Head of the Sustainability Webinar Series.

These questions will be tackled in the series which will play through Zoom and Facebook Live, under its three pillars: Leadership in Nature, Digital for Environment, and Business for People and Planet.

The pillar on Leadership in Nature (May 22) will explore the role of government agencies, local government units, and youth leaders in biodiversity conservation. This session will highlight firm commitments on reinforcing rules and policies to protect our natural habitat.

Because of the emerging technology era, the webinar on Digital for Environment (May 29) will tackle the health risks from pollution and biodiversity loss caused by producing and excessive use of technology.

Finally, on World Environment Day (June 5), the pillar on Business for People and Planet will showcase how the business has a huge role to play in preserving the natural resources and shifting towards sustainability and having a socially and environmentally centred mission.

The three sessions will bring together youth from different organizations across the Philippines to learn the practices straight from the experts and be inspired to blaze their own trail in initiating innovative strategies to protect the planet.

Among the speakers in the series are Reynard Francisco, Training Head of Sustainable Energy and Enterprise Development for Communities; Gia Santos, Managing Director of the Climate Change Corp and an Accelerator Program Officer at IdeaSpace Philippines; and Tim Daniels, Investor Relations Representative for SM Investments Corporation, among many other high-caliber resource persons.

According to Gonzales, we can take advantage of this global pandemic as a time to learn more about our surroundings, our environment, and our Earth; and how we can protect our world from further harm and conserve our resources.

“Facts and figures are equally important when we create solutions for societal and environmental issues. Through webinars like this, experience and insights from the speakers could be used as one of the basis for decision-making,” she added.
